Beat, Band and Boogie

Our Topic last term was “Beat, Band and Boogie” and Year 2 children participated in a drumming session with Ben a music teacher. We learnt some fascinating facts about the Djembe drum, where it comes from, what it’s made out of and we even learnt a new song with the djembe.

We learnt about rhythm, pitch, pulse and lots more new vocabulary.

We were also very lucky to have a very special music session with Mrs Kouzel who introduced an extraordinary musical instrument to us called ‘Qanoun’.  She showed us how difficult is to play.  Then, we had an opportunity to play on different musical instruments including: triangles, shakers, tambourines, maracas, xylophones etc.

Here are some quotes from some of the children:

Dominic said, “ The music started low, it built up and it got a bit sad (touched the heart). Moving towards the end was happy ”.

Leia said, “ It made me feel like I wanted to dance.”

Kayden identified that the instrument played different pitches.
