Maths Puzzles in Year 1
This week we have finished our topic on addition and subtraction to 20 with some tricky problem solving activities.
Today Faith class showed resilience and teamwork as they attempted this puzzle. Challenge 1 was to fit all the puzzle pieces together so that every pair of sides that touched made a number bond to ten.
Challenge 2 was the same, except that this time the pieces also had to fit together to make one big triangle! It took time and effort to solve this problem, and as we tried out different possibilities we made some interesting observations that helped us to get closer to the solution. For example, Isla and Bruno noticed that there were only three pieces with ‘5’ on, so that meant one of these 5s must not be touching anything else. Mrs Scott also suggested some strategies we could use, such as making a hexagon first and then adding three more triangles around the edge.
We were so proud when we finally solved the problem. Archie and Sakchham summed up our approach well, commenting, “We were struggling two times but Sakchham said to never give up, and then we just did it as teamwork!”
